What is circular economy?

Our production and consumption adhere to a linear economic model based on the notion that our planet provides us with an infinite supply of resources.

This model comprises 5 stages:

By definition, circular economy is a pioneering system that creates positive value socially, economically, and environmentally.  It’s a source of inspiration for companies from all industries for coming up with innovative products, services, and corporate models.

In an urban context, it applies to all aspects of economic activity.

The opportunities for you as an entrepreneur reside in:

  • a sustainable resource supply;
  • smart and sustainable product and services design (eco-design);
  • the exchange and pool of services and resources (industrial ecology);
  • the transition towards a services economy (functional economy);
  • resource repair, reuse, and recycling;
  • the development of short distribution channels, boosting local employment.

Programme Régional en Économie Circulaire (PREC - Regional Circular Economy Programme)

In March 2016, the Brussels-Capital Region adopted the PREC, an extensive strategic plan to boost the circular economy.

The PREC has 3 objectives:

  • turning environmental targets into economic opportunities;
  • anchoring economic activity in Brussels, producing locally where possible, reducing transports, optimizing land use, and creating added value for Brussels companies;
  • contributing to job creation.

IRISPHERE contributes to the PREC’s execution, and unites regional and local partners, businesses, and experts.

In late 2016, the PREC received the Regional Innovation Award of the Assembly of European Regions.
